Specialist Support Classes

Sidegate Primary School is fortunate to host a Specialist Support Class (SSC) on behalf of the Local Authority. This provision is made available to children who have a Statement of Special Educational Needs for Complex Learning Difficulties. At Sidegate the SSC is split into two classes; one for children from Year R to Year 3 (Sun Bears) and one for children from Year 4 to Year 6 (Harriers).  Click here to visit the SSC web page to find out more these classes.

Children within the SSC are usually working at “P-scale” level in Key Stage 1 and progress to National Curriculum levels during the latter years of Key Stage 2. The children are taught by specialist SEN teachers who are supported by teaching assistants. The school’s curriculum is adjusted by the SSC staff to meet the needs of the children.

The children in the SSC form part of the whole school community. Where appropriate to their ability and/or needs, children from the SSC integrate with their mainstream peers, for example: joining daily maths lessons or weekly PE lessons; attending local and residential visits; performing in musical productions.

Admission to the SSC is through the Local Authority’s SEN referral process. Referrals are made by schools and are considered by a Local Authority committee termly. Children must have a Statement of Special Educational Needs to be considered for a place.

There are also SSC's located at Castle Hill Infant School, Ipswich; Castle Hill Junior School, Ipswich; Gorseland Primary School, Kesgrave; Maidstone Infant School, Felixstowe; Causton Junior School, Felixstowe; St Gregory’s Primary School, Sudbury; and Abbot’s Green Primary School, Bury St Edmund’s.
