Sports Premium

Sidegate Primary School achieved the prestigious School Games Gold Award for our PE and Sport offer in 2014/15.

See application attached to the bottom of this page.

The Department for Education allocates a PE & Sports Premium fund of £8000 plus £5 per pupil to our school each year (approximately £11,000 in total). 2015 guidance from the DfE says:

Schools must use the funding to make additional and substantial improvements to the quality of PE and sport they offer. This means schools should use the premium to:

  • develop or add to the PE and sport activities that the school already offers;
  • make improvements now that will benefit pupils joining the school in future years.
For example, the school can use the funding to:
  • hire qualified sports coaches to work with teachers;
  • provide existing staff with training or resources to help them teach PE and sport more effectively;
  • introduce new sports or activities and encourage more pupils to take up sport;
  • support and involve the least active children by running or extending school sports clubs holiday clubs and Change4Life clubs
  • run sports competitions;
  • increase pupils' participation in the School Games;
  • run sports activities with other schools.

At Sidegate we use our PE & Sports Premium plus considerable extra funding from the school budget to fund:

  • Teacher training to improve the quality of PE teaching and develop sustainability for the future;
  • Qualified sports coaches to:

    • Organise intra-year group competitions to give all children the opportunity to participate in competitive sport;

    • Train our competition squads and organise participation in Level 2 and 3 competitions;

    • Provide lunchtime and after school clubs for sports that are promoted through the School Games initiative;

    • Train children to be leaders for school sports and clubs;

    • Support class teachers with the teaching of the PE curriculum;

  • Specialist sports equipment to support curriculum PE and for a range of extra-curricular sports including: archery, athletics, cricket, tag rugby, hockey, netball, basketball and football;

  • The running costs (chemicals, water, heating, maintenance and management) of the school's swimming pool;

  • Staffing to run a lunchtime Change 4 Life club;

  • Membership of Ipswich Primary School Sports Association which organises local inter-school competitions, events and leagues;

  • Membership of the Copleston Sports Partnership which organises local events that can lead on to regional and national level Schools Games events in the following sports: athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, golf, gymnastics, hockey, netball, rounders, rugby union, swimming, table tennis, tennis;

  • Sports kit for school teams;

  • Transport to competitions.

We also use qualified sports coaches to:
  • Teach PE during the school day;

  • Teach swimming to all children from Years R to 4 in the school's pool;

  • Teach swimming to Years 5 and 6 at Fore Street pool.

We work closely with EBAT, who visit the school annually to offer a tennis experience for all pupils and then offer coaching opportunities at their Ipswich Tennis Academy.

Many of our extra-curricular activities are also run and/or supported by members of school staff who volunteer their time and expertise outside of their normal paid working hours. Our thanks goes to all of the adults that enable our children to access and enjoy such a wide range of sports.

We also offer some extra-curricular activities at a small cost to families. Children who qualify for Pupil Premium funding may be to attend these clubs free or at a reduced cost; families should contact the Family Liaison Manager if they wish to take advantage of this.
